In 2007 when I made my first movie that aired on PBS/WEDU called Ten at the Top in Tampa Bay, women’s groups asked me to speak and show the movie. They loved the film but were also very intrigued by how I produced it without going to film school!
I could see their eyes light up after watching it and big smiles appear as I told them about my first filmmaking experience. They would come up to me and ask me more questions afterward…
I could tell they were seeking answers for pursuing their own dreams… they wanted to know my success formula.
It was then that I realized I had a strategy for making my dreams come true and that I’d been using it my whole life.
Creating my vision, finding people and resources through networking to help me reinforce my belief, and to arm me with what I needed to take bold action.
I’d done that to…
- Letter 8 times in 4 different high school sports,
- Earn athletic scholarships to afford college,
- Play NCAA Div. 1 tennis at the University of South Florida,
- Get my first professional job in county government after earning my Bachelors degree, and
- Find the courage to earn my Master’s degree (with honors) after not having a very exciting GPA with my undergrad degree.
But, I was younger back then and uncomfortable with people looking to me as some kind of guru…
I’d always mentored people and helped friends with career or life advice, but this was different…
These were strangers who were connecting with me at these events, and wanting me to personally help them achieve their goals.
I would tell them what I could… but had no book to sell or formal way to give them my success strategies since I hadn’t formalized them into a program.
When I retired from my 20-year government career in 2017, I knew I needed support, so I hired an awesome success coach named Deb Cheslow.
She helped me more clearly identify my vision, strengthen my belief in my goals, and encouraged me to take my dreams to the next level with bold action.
One thing she taught me was very critical…
When you have a gift that can help change the world for good: have the courage to give it and don’t let the fear of failure hold you back…
- You don’t have to do it perfectly or better than everyone else…
- You just need to show up and do your part in your own way.
I reflected back that when I set out to make Ten at the Top in Tampa Bay, I was scared of failure, but my passion to inspire the world with the story about powerful women leaders was stronger…
I’ve since produced many successful women empowerment events, formalized my own online success coaching program Power Hack® Playbook, and produced my third documentary film, Because of Sam that sold out Tampa Theatre and won Tampa’s Downtown Partnership Urban Excellence People’s Choice Award.
The film is now available to stream at WatchBecauseofSam.com.
