Have the Confidence to Pitch Your Own Products and Services
Getting media exposure isn’t rocket science, but a powerful pitch can increase your odds of grabbing the media’s attention…
News outlets (and big influencers with podcasts) crave positive, compelling content to highlight, especially during these days of politics and the pandemic.
Whether you’re trying to land a TV/radio interview; to be featured in the newspaper; or to be invited to be on a podcast, these 3 tips can help…
Use the 3 Cs:
- Catchy Headline
- Compelling Clear Content
- Complete Contact Information
1. A Catchy Headline should support your story angle that THEIR (the media outlet) readers want to read – It makes them want to read more, much like the cover letter should get a future boss to read a resume.
Pro Tip: If you are promoting an event, for example, partner with a brand (maybe the venue?) that has a positive image, with a robust following. This can increase your likelihood of being noticed.
2. Your Compelling Story should contain clear, concise information, i.e. the who, what, when. It helps to tie your pitch to a story angle.
Examples: If you make art that has heart-shaped images or reflect love, then pitching about Valentine’s Day for a February story, makes sense; or an African American apparel, the black-owned business could be tied into Black History Month, which is also in February.
Here’s a successful women empowerment, art story I landed during Women’s History Month:
Pro tip: Attach an image or video link to show your story/product in a picture.
3. Complete Contact Information expedites the connection if they are interested in finding you. List your phone number, email address, website, (and your social media handles if you have them). End the pitch with your standard boilerplate language that describes your company.

Pro Tip: To 10x your brand’s image and credibility with the media, it helps to have a Media Kit on your website where you post your press releases; your “one-pager” that contains your bio, company/offerings, and services; and logo. See mine here.
Pro Tip: Build relationships with reporters. Thank them when they cover you. Follow them. Retweet and share their stories that matter to you. Send them story ideas even if they are not yours… you can be a helpful resource to them within your areas of expertise or network.
